Most burns are caused by:
- Dry heat (such as fire, radiation or other hot substances)
- Wet heat (such as water, hot oils, or other liquids)
- Radiation (from nuclear materials)
- Electricity (from electric currents and lights)
- Chemicals (such as acids and bases)
- Light (such as from the sun or other intense sources of light)
- Friction
Burn accidents can occur anywhere. They can happen in the home, at the workplace, from a car or other vehicle accident, by working or playing with dangerous materials, from an explosion, or from defective products.
The skin is our protection against losing moisture. It helps to regulate our temperature, as well as defends us from infection. The more skin that is lost from a burn, and the deeper the burn goes, the more serious the consequences.
Degrees of Burns
Burns are classified by how deeply they penetrate the body. They are classified as the following:
- First degree burns are superficial. They damage the outer layer of the skin and cause pain, redness and swelling.
- Second degree burns go deeper, affecting the outer skin layer as well as the layer beneath. They cause pain, redness, swelling and blistering.
- Third degree burns penetrate the skin, and may damage other tissues and body structures. The skin turns white or black, becomes charred, and may be numb.
Treatment for Burns
The treatment for minor burns requires first aid. Measures include:
- If the skin is unbroken, run cool water over the location of the burn or soak it in cool water (not ice water). Keep the area in the water for at least five minutes. A towel that is clean, cold and wet can help reduce pain.
- After treating with cool water, cover the burned area with a sterile, dry bandage or dressing.
- Do not allow pressure or friction to come into contact with the burn.
- Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce pain and swelling (children under 12 years old should not be given aspirin).
- Be sure the patient’s tetanus shots are current.
Treatment for more serious burns involves treating pain as well as the condition. Burn pain is among the most intense as well as prolonged types of pain. In addition, treating burn pain itself is painful because the wounds must be cleaned and the dressings changed.
Severe burns may require skin grafts or transplanting synthetic skin. More rigorous treatment is also required to treat infection, such as using antibiotics and replacing fluids, such as giving fluids intravenously.
